August 2010 - Setting Your Sites Project Shortlisted To Win National Award

Ellingham’s successful “Setting Your Sites” project has been shortlisted for a prestigious Charity Times Award, in the Best Use of Technology category.

The Charity Times Awards are designed to recognise and reward excellence in the management and co-ordination of all charitable activities. The judging panel consists of leading figures in the UK charity sector, and thus ensures the awards continue to be the pre-eminent celebration of best practice in the UK charity and not-for-profit sector.
The award for Best Use of Technology acknowledges organisations that demonstrate innovative and effective use of IT within its operations.
Setting Your Sites was an LSC funded project using accessible easy read websites to enable young learners with learning disabilities to create on-line multimedia CVs to showcase their skills and challenge misconceptions about their work capabilities. The project integrated new media to build participants’ confidence and encourage progression from education towards the world of work
This nomination recognises the great work that everyone in the project team has done in the last year, especially our specialist “e-Mentor” team who have worked tirelessly with rapidly approaching 250 participants from a total of 9 East London boroughs.
Setting Your Sites Project Manager Miles Leonard said: "This project has highlighted the need to engage with people with Learning Disabilities whilst they are still in education to encourage their progression into employment.  The Ellingham team have devised an integrated training programme to address a lack of progression into employment which we are uniquely placed to deliver given our understanding of both new media advocacy and the experience of young people with learning disabilities in the workplace."

June 2010 - Celebrating Learning Disability Week

A group from Ellingham this week joined around 500 others in celebrating Learning Disability Week in Ray Park, Redbridge.

People with learning disabilities from Redbridge, Waltham Forest and surrounding boroughs, joined other community groups, local schools and members of the public at the all day festival, which included a wide variety of sessions including dance performances and music throughout the day.

May 2010 - Setting Your Sites On Employment
This month saw the successful completion of our Setting Your Sites project.
Setting Your Sites was and LSC funded project using accessible easy read websites to enable young learners with learning disabilities to create on-line multimedia CVs to showcase their skills and challenge misconceptions about their work capabilities. The project integrated new media to build participants’ confidence and encourage progression from education towards the world of work.

Between November 2009 and May 2010 our team delivered this project in 9 East London boroughs (Newham, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Islington, Lewisham, Bexley, Barking & Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge) and have so far engaged with 240 learners (and counting!) with LD who are still in education. At least one college or organisation per borough participated. We delivered a personal development, employment preparation and confidence building programme at each college for up to 25 of their LLDD, during which all learners were supported in creating an online multimedia CV. A further 54 learners undertook work experience placements working as accessible information builders within their boroughs.

The funding for the Setting Your Sites project has come to an end now but far from resting on our laurels we are working on developing something even better to replace it.
The project was born out of an appreciation that the internet is relevant and interesting to young LLDD, many of whom are already very familiar with and keen on digital media and the web. Our project therefore spoke to participants in a language that they recognise, like and understand.

At the same time we recognised that many people with learning disabilities were previously prevented from fully embracing the web’s potential by a general lack of accessibility. Our use of the web has therefore been powerful as it has enabled us to engage with young people who may not have been keen or able to engage with traditional approaches to employment preparation which our statistics told us were not working.
For more information on this project, contact Miles on 0208 519 5234 or miles.leonard@ellingham.org.uk.

March 2010 - Angela Gets A Great Reception

Another month and another retirement! On 19th March long serving Angela Comely celebrated her retirement from Ellingham after more than 20 years working for the organisation.

To many people Angela was the familiar voice and face of Ellingham as she ran our busy reception desk, and was the first friendly point of contact for so many people who have interacted with Ellingham down the years.
Ellingham certainly won’t seem the same without Angela so in order to show how much she will be missed, a large retirement party was held with many old faces from Angela’s time at Ellingham also in attendance to give her a big send off.
Chief Executive Chris Bailey led the many tributes before presenting Angela with gifts from staff and service users alike. We are all sad to see Angela go but of course wish her a very happy retirement indeed.
We are also pleased to announce that Ruth Stokes has joined Ellingham as our new receptionist and we are very happy to welcome Ruth to the team!

December 2009 - Open Day A Success - More To Follow

On Friday 11th December Ellingham held a special event for Jobcentre Plus staff to showcase the various new and innovative approaches we are currently taking to improving employment opportunities for our clients.

With so many new projects under way we felt it was important to publicise them.

The event was well attended by Disability Employment Advisors from all over North East London who were keen to find out about the numerous services and projects we are currently offering to people with learning disabilities. Ellingham have a long history of working closely and productively with Jobcentre Plus and with a number of new staff recently joining both organisations this was an ideal opportunity to get acquainted and maintain those strong links.

Ellingham Chief Executive Chris Bailey hosted the event, beginning by outlining our vision, new developments and plans for the future. This was followed by overviews from various staff who provided information about Future Jobs Fund and Train To Gain as well as Work Preparation, Workstep and Access To Work. The attendees were also given a demonstration of our latest cutting edge multimedia projects: Click Start and Setting Your Sites.

As well as formal presentations, attendees had the opportunity to meet and network with our staff teams over lunch, and also get interactive with some of the multimedia technology that Ellingham is currently pioneering.

Feedback from all concerned was very positive and we are already planning more similar events in the future – with the next one scheduled for April 2010.

You can read more about our many new and exciting projects below, as most are outlined within this News page…

Ellingham are pleased and proud to have once again retained the Two Tick disability symbol in recognition of our commitment to good practice in the employment of people with disabilities.

The symbol is awarded by Jobcentre Plus to employers who have made commitments to employ, keep and develop the abilities of disabled staff. Ellingham have been holders of the disability symbol since 1995.

Pat Fuller of Jobcentre Plus visited our headquarters to formally present the symbol to Ellingham’s Board of Directors, Chief Executive Chris Bailey and Project Co-ordinator Helen Gore.  Pat had no hesitation in renewing Ellingham’s symbol, which gets reviewed annually, and congratulated Ellingham for continuing to lead by example in employing people with disabilities.

When you are applying for jobs, look out for employers using the disability symbol. It shows they have a positive attitude towards job applications from disabled people.

October 2009 - Making Headway In Redbridge

In October Ellingham began working with a group of students from Redbridge College on a brand new employment project called Headways.

The project will last for the entire academic year and will target young people with learning disabilities who are in their final year at the college on special needs courses.  The objective is to work towards bridging the gap between education and employment.

Our research shows us that without projects such as this, young people with learning disabilities are likely to finish college without achieving the positive outcome of entry into employment or further training towards employment.

Participants will visit Ellingham two days per week on an intensive work preparation course, whilst at the same time still attending college and working on their qualifications.  Ellingham’s staff will therefore complement the staff from Redbridge College, adding value to the curriculum by delivering work-focussed training and support in the transition to “real” work, working with employers in a role that college tutors would not usually undertake.

August 2009 - Service Update: Ellingham Partner With London Underground

Ellingham are thrilled that our first client has gained paid employment with London Underground having participated in a successful work experience initiative.

Not long after meeting David, we soon discovered that he has an exceptional knowledge of the transport network that operates in and around London and the South East.  If anybody has any travel queries then David is the man to ask – you will get your answer and a few interesting travel facts thrown in for good measure.

Ellingham Training Coordinator Michele Haffern first set up Ellingham’s partnership with London Underground began back in 2007. To date, numerous clients have undertaken work placements and been given the opportunity to gain a City and Guilds accreditation in Customer Service. The feedback from all involved in the work placement programmes has been extremely positive and a great learning experience.

For David, one of the first to be involved in the programme, it has turned out to be more than just a worthwhile experience.   With the assistance of Ellingham’s support worker Ismail Haji, David succeeded through the various stages of a rigorous selection process to be offered employment at one of London’s busy Underground stations. Working for London Underground as a Customer Support Assistant is David’s perfect job and a dream come true!

Participating in a well organised programme and witnessing first hand the enthusiasm and professionalism of all the London Underground staff has been commendable. Ellingham are pleased to be able to offer continued support to London Underground and David thorough our Workstep Programme, which assists disabled people in employment.

Next time you are travelling on the tube network and are in need of some help and advice, look for the smiling faces of the customer service assistants and you may recognise a familiar friendly face.

May 2009 - Click Start Editorial Team Are An Online Hit

Ellingham’s Editorial Team are continuing to make a fantastic contribution to the Click Start project’s success.

Vivek, Jason and Lee are young people with learning disabilities employed by Ellingham to work on this project, and under the guidance of Miles Leonard from Ellingham the team have produced some outstanding work that has been invaluable to the delivery of Click Start.

Click Start’s objective is to provide accessible information on line for people with learning disabilities in the process of transition to adult life in the community.

The Editorial Team have been hard at work planning, building and testing numerous easy read websites.  Along the way they have developed their skills in the use of multimedia as well as building their confidence and presentation skills.  They have also visited various organisations that provide transition services for people with learning disabilities and delivered bespoke training sessions for both staff and service users to enable them to participate in the project.

The Editorial Team have been able to effectively share their experience and demonstrate good practice on websites such as Wiki Things, which contains advice on how to make an easy read Wiki website.

The aim is for the team to work as independently as possible and take ownership of what they are producing. Having developed their own “Hit Squad” model a website building service has now been established. Using this approach the team have been creating sites on behalf of other organisations to describe local services and facilities in accessible way.

Vivek, Jason and Lee are enjoying working on the project say it has been a “life changing” experience. Not only have they developed inclusive methods of working together to allow everyone to participate, they have also established effective working practices that can be replicated elsewhere.

April 2009 - Raising Our Game For The Olympics

As part of our ongoing involvement in the ELLDEC initiative, Ellingham has helped to roll out the first Raising Our Game training programme.

Raising Our Game is an accredited pre-employment training course using multi-media which was developed by ELLDEC, a partnership of LD training providers across the 5 Olympic boroughs of London. Ellingham is a founder member of ELLDEC along with Tower Project, Hackney Recruitment Partnership, First Line and AEA Greenwich.

ELLDEC were invited to deliver this programme by the Olympic Delivery Agency, and the course aims to better equip young people with learning disabilities for employment, particularly with the Olympic Games taking place in London in 2012.

15 participants took part in the 4 day programme, which took place at The Grassroots Centre in West Ham. Not only did the group learn a lot and have a hugely enjoyable experience, but they also achieved OCN Entry to Employment (Entry Level 3) qualifications.

Ellingham’s Editorial Team who are currently working on the Click Start project were also in attendance. They helped to facilitate the multimedia aspects of the training, and showed the group how to make on-line CVs. Team members Vivek and Jason also delivered a session about work related skills.

April 2009 - Growing Better Futures With Ellingham

Ellingham's horticultural training programme Growing Futures has proved to be a huge success.

Growing Futures was a vocational training programme funded by London Borough of Waltham Forest (Future Foundations Framework).

The project which was funded from August 2008 to March 2009 was designed to give 18 adults with learning disabilities living in the borough of Waltham Forest a qualification in horticulture, and the opportunity of a work experience placements for a few learners.

All learners followed an individually tailored learning plan, which enabled them to achieve their goals within the structure of an accredited programme. Those that were able also progress to complete the NVQ level one qualification in horticulture.  The supported work experience was provided by Ellingham’s gardening social enterprise, “Weedbusters”.

All 18 learners completed an OCR qualification; In addition, 11 of the 18 learners completed an NVQ level 1 in horticulture which is being accredited through our partners Caple Manor.

Louise, a participant who achieved two accredited qualifications in horticulture, an OCR and an NVQ, said: “I enjoyed the trips to garden centres and the parks and I have been surprised how many different jobs are available around garden centres and parks. I have also enjoyed the writing up of what we have done. This was to keep a record for the qualification, and has improved my writing and reading skills”.

Louise has been out in all weathers at the allotment, and enjoyed all of the hands on tasks, these include clearing the area of weeds, digging trenches, seeding, re-planting and as Louise put it in her own words “I love nothing more than getting stuck in, as I wanted to get the qualifications”.

The project is being delivered by Ellingham in partnership with The Rix Centre and is funded by the Learning & Skills Council.
